The great female blues singer Bessie Smith (April 15, 1894 - September 26, 1937) later on referred to as The Empress of The Blues, stars in the early sound short film St. Louis Blues directed by Dudley Murphy in 1929 (her only film appearance). In this sequence, Bessie Smith performs the title song accompanied by members of Fletcher Henderson’s orchestra, the Hall Johnson Choir and pianist James P. Johnson.
